Grade 9 Lesson 1: Recap ~ Word Processing

Objectives:

  • Create documents using word processing software
  • Save a document to a location on a drive and other secondary storage media
  • Save a document under another name.

  • Move blocks of text, apply page layout and paragraph formatting features within documents.
  • Indent paragraphs: first line, hanging.
  • Apply single, double line spacing within paragraphs
  • Apply and remove bullets, numbers to a single level list.
  • Change document orientation, portrait,landscape.
  • Change paper size and margins of entire document,
  • Use word processing software to move blocks of text, apply page layout and paragraph formatting features within document.

The information below will be used to recap this topic.

Traditionally, software has been divided into two different categories: systems software and applications software. However, in addition to those, an entire new batch of wares has entered the computer vernacular in recent years. For years people understood the term software to refer to computer instructions; meaning the programs or data. Traditionally, software has been divided into two different categories: system software and applications software. However, in addition to those, an entire new batch of wares has entered the computer vernacular in recent years.

What is System Software?System software sits directly on top of your computer’s hardware components (also referred to as its bare metal). It includes the range of software you would install to your system that enables it to function. This includes the operating system, drivers for your hardware devices, linkers and debuggers. Systems software can also be used for managing computer resources. Systems software is designed to be used by the computer system itself, not human users.

Application Software Defined

Unlike systems software, applications software is designed to be used by end-users. Applications software, in essence, sits on top of system software, as it is unable to run without the operating system and other utilities. Generally, people will refer to applications software as software.

Applications software includes things like: database programs, word processors and spreadsheets, e-mail applications, computer games, graphics programs

  1. Move paragraph 2 to the end
  2. Justify paragraph 1, right align paragraph 2 and center paragraph 3
  3. Change paragraph 1 to Times New Roman size 12, paragraph 2 to Arial size 10, colour blue and paragraph 3 to Times New Roman, colour Red
  4. Underline and Bold the heading for paragraph 3
  5. Write a main heading for the paragraphs and make it italic
  6. Change the orientation of the page to landscape
  7. Indent the first line in paragraph 1, hang the information in paragraph 3
  8. Double space paragraph 2
  9. Add bullet point or numbers to the items that are included in the application software
  10. Change the paper size to legal and the left and right margin to 1.5

Home work

Copy the paragraphs below  and then edit of  the document to demonstrate what was taught in class.

Non impact Printers

Non impact printers, used almost everywhere now, are faster and quieter than impact printers because they have fewer moving parts. Non impact printers form characters and images without direct physical contact between the printing mechanism and the paper. Two types of non impact printers often used with microcomputers are laser printers and ink-jet printers.

Laser Printer:

Like a dot-matrix printer, a laser printer creates images with dots. However, as in a photocopying machine, these images are created on a drum, treated with a magnetically charged ink-like toner (powder), and then transferred from drum to paper.
– There are good reasons why laser printers are so popular. They produce sharp, crisp images of both text and graphics, providing resolutions from 300 dpi up to 1200 dpi, which is near-typeset quality (NTQ). They are quiet and fast. They can print 4-32 text-only pages per minute for individual microcomputers, and more than 120 pages per minute for mainframes. (Pages with more graphics print more slowly.) They can print in many fonts (type styles and sizes). The more expensive models can print in different colors.

Ink-jet printer:

Like laser and dot-matrix printers, ink-jet printers also form images with little dotsInk-jet printers spray small, electrically charged droplets of ink from four nozzles through holes in a matrix at high speed onto paper. Ink-jet printers can print in color and are quieter and much less expensive than a color laser printer. However, they are slower and print in a somewhat lower resolution (300-720 dpi) than laser printers. Some new, expensive ink-jet printers print up 1200 or 1400 dpi. High resolution output requires the use of special coated paper, which costs more regular paper. And, if you are printing color graphics at a high resolution on an ink-jet printer, it may take 10 minutes or more for a single page finish printing.

  1. Move paragraph 2 to the end
  2. Center paragraph 1, justify paragraph 2 and center paragraph 3
  3. Change paragraph 1 to Arial size 12, paragraph 2 to Time New Roman size 10, colour blue and paragraph 3 to Calibri, colour Red
  4. Underline  the heading for paragraph 3
  5. Bold and Italic the main heading
  6. Change the orientation of the page to landscape
  7. Indent the first line in paragraph 2, hang the information in paragraph 1
  8. Use 1.5 spacing for  paragraph 2
  9. Add bullet point or numbers to the types of non-impact printers
  10. Change the paper size to legal and the left and right margin to 2″

(You teacher will instruct you on whether you should collaborate (group) or do it individually and where to submit this work. )
